City of GSO Neglects Lee St Road Conditions. Watch Video.

by ryan shell on January 12, 2010

Without a doubt, the City of Greensboro has neglected Lee Street (primarily from Elm to the Coliseum.

More so, the City has neglected the Lee / Eugene Street intersection so much that it has turned into one big giant mess. I pass through the intersection on a daily basis and there is a massive crack/dip in the road that literally feels like your vehicle (I drive a car) is going to break in half – and I’m not exaggerating.

This issue is at least two months old (that’s on the generous side) and it is what I would call extremely bad driving conditions on a main thoroughfare to the coliseum, and into downtown Greensboro.

Please take a moment and watch the short video I recorded a couple of days ago that highlights the intersection in question (keep in mind the entire section of road I previously mentioned needs attention).

The City of Greensboro is aware of the issue and this is what a senior employee said about the High Point Road conditions,

“Since we are more than likely going to be implementing streetscape improvements on High Point Road and Lee Street in the near future, it does not make sense to pursue resurfacing these streets at this time.

I also sent these ride quality/pavement condition concerns along to our Field Operations Department and they responded that they are going to look at patching some of the rough spots (potholes, cracks, raveling) and also work with our Water Resources Department on leveling some of the manholes which are affecting ride quality. These maintenance activities should hold us over until we can schedule the streetscape improvements which will include full repair and resurfacing of these streets.”

It’s been 20 days since that message was received and nothing has been done – it’s actually only gotten worse. And I’m sorry to be up on a soap box about this, but the conditions are so bad that I routinely receive complaints about the conditions, not to mention this is a stretch of road that I’ve adopted.

If you think I’m blowing this out of proportion please go take a drive and get a first hand experience. Start at the coliseum (get in Left lane as you approach Eugene so you can experience the “crack”) on Lee Street and head towards downtown; once you get to Elm turn around and go back.

Note: This post breaks the typical format for this site as I’ve added opinion to this post. This issue simply needed to be highlighted.

It may be bad, but the video proves nothing more than the inability of the videographer to hold the camera still.

That spot has been driving me bonkers. Its a little smoother than it was, but its still poor. And I still cringe when I’m in the intersection expecting to stop dead in that hole.

Jennifer, thanks for your comment… but I was driving and think you can clearly see the issue, no matter if the camera moves or not. Forget the video, go take a drive and see if for yourself.

Matt, I feel your pain! I started using the right hand lane, but it’s now just as bad. It’s almost like you are driving through craters.
