Dilapidated Home Virtually Unchanged in 3 Years. Acceptable?

by ryan shell on March 3, 2010

There are many parts of Greensboro that a lot of people never see or get exposed too. Some of these areas in particular are plagued by crime, drugs, prostitution… and a lot of rundown houses. One thing I’ve tried to do for some time is highlight the areas in question and highlight things that may otherwise go unnoticed or ignored.

911 Reid Street is a perfect example.

This District 2 home is one block from Bennett College and just a stones throw from a voting precinct. I’ve made calls, sent emails, talked to the current owner and made numerous blog post in an effort to get this home rehabilitated or torn down. To be clear, I value property rights, but this house has been detrimental to Reid St for more than 4 years and has virtually been untouched. Homes of this condition (The worst of the worst) plague neighborhoods/foster criminal activity and need to be dealt with – not simply forgotten.

I decided to drive by the house today and see if any progress had been made, but unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. What once could have been a families home is nothing more than a symbol of dilapidation and neglect.

Allow me to take you through a three year timeline with 911 Reid.

  • Here’s what it looked like in early 2008
  • I wrote this in 2008 once again highlight the home(can’t seem to find the 2008 photo)
  • This post shows you what it looked like in 2009 as well as some details on a change in ownership
  • And here is a photo of the home taken today, March 3, 2010.

I’m not sure what your thought will be on this, but I hope you’ll take a moment and consider what it would be like to live across from, or next to this home… because someone does.
