Google Greensboro Marketing Efforts & New Ideas

by ryan shell on March 10, 2010

Let’s talk about the Google initiative for a second; more so let’s talk about the marketing effort.

Facebook Group

Note: I’ve not mentioned the Facebook group a lot because it’s not something officially operated by the City of Greensboro, but I’ll ignore that for a moment.

The group seems to be growing, all be it at a somewhat slow rate when compared to other cities that have 10,000 – 20,000 fans of their page or members of their group.

So how do we grow the group and surpass other cities we’re competing with?

One idea might be to talk with the universities and see if they could do an email blast to all of their students. Is this even possible? I don’t have a clue, but making the ask certainly doesn’t cost anything.

Another idea might be to talk with the Chamber and see if they could do an email blast about the initiative – after all, this could be great for the local economy.

How many email addresses does the City have on file? Has an email blast been sent to those individuals that is only (targeted focus is important) about the Google initiative? If not, that might not be a bad idea either.

There are lots of ways to grow Facebook pages/groups (they are two different things), but I can’t say that I’ve seen a clear list of what has been done, or what is being done to do so.

ACC Tournament

The ACC Tournament has officially kicked off in Greensboro, but are we doing anything to attract television coverage at the event?

Imagine if some type event fan, bam bam stick (cheesy name but that’s what they’re called) or something that said Google Greensboro was handed out to fans as they entered the coliseum.

What if computers were set up so people could send direct emails to a Google representative (or fill out the online form) telling them why they should come to Greensboro?

What if we changed the name of the coliseum during the tournament to the Google Arena or something like that?

There are lots of ideas that could be tossed out to create awareness about Greensboro’s desire to attract Google, but I’m just not sure what the City is willing to do.

And no matter if you have a care in the world about the Google initiative, it seems important to give this a good effort as it will help strengthen our ability to win over opportunities in the future.
